Admissions Policy

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences <master's course> 1.Concept
 The goal of the Graduate School is to train highly specialized professionals in the humanities and social sciences, who in the course of their study here will acquire the expertise and experience that are called for in this era of globalization and inter-connectivity. We are confident that our graduates will contribute to the development of human society through the promotion of Japanese culture and the revitalization of industry and the economy.

2.Admissions Policy
 In line with the above educational goals, the Graduate School has formulated the following admissions policy:

The Humanities and Social Sciences M.A. program is designed for
① those who wish to acquire advanced specialized knowledge and expertise based on the latest theoretical and methodological approaches in the humanities and social sciences.
② those who are greatly motivated to take on problems facing the modern world by assuming a bird's eye view of these issues from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences and to utilize the theories and the methodologies of multiple specialized fields and apply them in a cross-disciplinary manner.
③ those who, as highly skilled professionals in the humanities and social sciences, having acquired the qualities and abilities appropriate to careers in this age of globalization and inter-connectivity, are motivated to contribute to economic and industrial revitalization and to the development of human society through the promotion of Japanese culture.


Courses/Majors
(Cultural Arts Course)
The Cultural Arts Course is designed for
① those who wish to deepen their expertise in all aspects of human culture and the arts.
② those who are highly interested in passing on Japanese and foreign cultural resources to future generations as common cultural heritages of humankind.
③ those who wish to contribute to the development of the whole of human society through the promotion of culture and the arts.

(Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course)
The Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course is designed for
① those who wish to deepen their expertise in Japanese and global history, the characteristics of different regions and cultures of the world and legal and social systems.
② those who have a strong interest in working to solve various issues for the realization of symbiotic and harmonious societies.
③ those who are motivated to lay the foundations for legal and social systems that are best suited to this inter-connected age.

(Policy Science Course)
The Policy Science Course is designed for
① those who wish to enhance their expertise in domestic and global economics and industry.
② those who are greatly interested in working to solve issues involving domestic and global economies and industry from a comprehensive global perspective.
③ those who are keen to become involved in the running of national and local governments, corporations, and other organizations from policy perspectives and approaches that are best suited to this age of globalization.

3.Basic Selection Policy for Applicants
 In order to evaluate the applicant's basic academic skills in the humanities and social sciences, as well as the applicant's motivation and plans to pursue specialized study, the following standards will be adhered to in the selection process.

(1) General Admissions, Special Admission for Non-Traditional Applicants with Fulltime Jobs, Special Admission for International Students
 Admission will be based on the combined results of a written examination in the applicant’s major field and an oral examination. (The oral examination will be based on the applicant’s transcripts and research proposal.)

(2) Special Selection by Recommendation
 Selection will be based on an oral examination (The oral examination will be based on the applicant’s transcripts and research proposal.)

(3) Special Selection Process for Students from Affiliated Institutions
 Selection will be based on the documents submitted by the applicant.


Curriculum Policy: Organization and Implementation

1.Organization and Implementation of the Curriculum
 The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, in line with its objective of turning out highly-skilled professionals in the humanities and social sciences who will be prepared to pursue careers well suited to meet the challenges of this era of globalization and cultural and social inter-connectedness, has established the following curriculum guidelines for each Course.

(Cultural Arts Course/major)
① This curriculum of the Cultural Arts Course is designed to introduce students to the academic knowledge and the scientific methods that will give them a multifaceted understanding of all aspects of culture and art in Japan as well as those in other countries and regions of the world. [specialized courses in cultural properties, Japanese language and literature, intellectual thought and the arts, etc.]
② Students will acquire the specialized skills and techniques needed to work in professions that deal with a wide range of cultural resources and artifacts. They will also develop the ability to accurately ascertain the value and significance of these. [special research / project research, etc.]
③ Students will apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to evaluate and utilize, and thereby contribute to the promotion of cultural resources at both the national and local level. [cross-disciplinary subjects, specialized subjects/courses in the Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course and the Policy Science Course, etc.]

(Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course/major)
① Students in the Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course will, in addition to enhancing their ability to use foreign languages as a communication tool, gain a specialized understanding of both Japanese and global history as well as the regional characteristics of different parts of the world and their legal and social systems. [language sciences, regional histories, world geography, modern law and politics, etc.]
② In this Course, students will, based on an understanding of history and a sense of the values that are relevant to this age of globalization and inter-connectedness, build their capacity to identify and seek out solutions to the various problems that challenge modern societies today, solutions that can bring about the realization of truly inter-connected and harmonious societies. [special research/project research, etc.]
③ Students will develop the ability to use the knowledge and skills they have acquired to respond to the challenges posed by globalization and to envision social and legal systems that are best suited to this era of inter-connectedness between nations and regions. [cross-disciplinary subjects, specialized subjects/courses in the Cultural Arts Course and the Policy Science Course, etc.]

(Policy Science Course/major)
① Students will be exposed to the latest academic theories and methodologies in the fields of economic and statistical analysis, policy assessment, and accounting information. [specialized courses in economic and statistical analysis, policy assessment, accounting information, etc.]
② This course is designed to instill in its majors the insights necessary to accurately grasp and seek out solutions from a global perspective to issues in domestic and international economic and industrial affairs. [special research/project research, etc.]
③ In this Course, students will, in light of advancing globalization and the increasing complexity of the economic and industrial situation in Japan, learn to provide accurate advice and meaningful proposals from a policy perspective to national governments, local governments, and corporations. [cross-disciplinary subjects, specialized subjects/courses in the Cultural Arts Course and the Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course, etc.]

2.Educational and Learning Approaches
(1) The connection between the Graduate School’s degree granting policy and the curriculum, which incorporates the aim of unifying pedagogical objectives and the Graduate School curriculum, as well as to encourage students to engage in autonomous and meaningful study, is spelled out in the curriculum map (Course system diagram).
(2) In addition to providing the means to gain specialized knowledge and skills as well as a solid theoretical grounding in the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences, the Graduate School also provides the coursework and research guidance that enables students to work on issues that traverse disciplinary boundaries.
(3) The Graduate School has implemented an educational program that enhances planning for research as well as the ability to communicate research findings to the outside world (e.g., preparation and submission of the master’s thesis research proposal, an open interim presentation forum and a public presentation of the final results).

3.Assessment of Learning Outcomes
(1) To rigorously evaluate learning outcomes, the Graduate School has established evaluation standards consistent with its educational goals. Evaluations will be based on grading standards that are in line with these goals.
(2) Evaluation of students’ performance will be determined by scheduled examinations, written reports and papers, in-class quizzes and presentations, etc. Evaluation standards will be clearly stated in the syllabus for each course along with the details of course content.


Graduation and Degree (Diploma) Policy

① Students in the Graduate School who have acquired advanced specialized knowledge and skills based on the latest academic theories and methodologies in the humanities and social sciences.
② Students who, in addition to having gained specialized knowledge and skills in a specific discipline within the humanities and social sciences, have also developed the ability to approach social, cultural and economic issues from a broad cross-disciplinary bird’s-eye perspective.
③ As highly-skilled professionals in the humanities and social sciences who have acquired qualities and abilities well suited for this age of globalization and inter-connectedness, our students will also leave with practical and analytical skills that enable them to contribute to the promotion of Japanese culture and the revitalization of the Japanese economy and its industries, and by doing play an active role in the development of human society in general.

[Individual Courses]
(Cultural Arts Course)
① Students will gain advanced specialized knowledge and skills through their exposure to the latest academic theories and methodologies in the fields of cultural properties, Japanese language and literature, intellectual thought and the arts.
② Students will leave with the ability to promote Japanese culture abroad, while at the same time respecting the cultural values of other peoples from a perspective of coexistence and inter-connectedness.
③ Graduates will also be able apply the knowledge and practical analytical skills they have acquired to contribute to measures that promote national and local cultures.

(Modern Inter-Cultural Studies Course)
① Students will acquire advanced specialized knowledge and skills based on the latest academic theories and methodologies in the fields of linguistics, regional studies, global studies, and contemporary law and politics.
② Students will also learn to search for solutions to various issues, grounded in the values and an understanding of history that are appropriate to the age of globalization and inter-connectivity, accomplishments that will help them contribute to the realization of truly harmonious and symbiotic societies.
③ Graduates will be able to use the knowledge and skills they have acquired to respond to the globalization of society, and to acquire the practical and applied skills to envision legal and social systems suitable for this age of inter-connectivity.

(Policy Science Course)
① Students will attain a high level of specialized knowledge and acquire skills based on the latest academic theories and methodologies in the fields of economic and statistical analysis, policy assessment, and accounting information.
② Students will also acquire the capacity to seek out solutions to economic and industrial production issues from a global perspective.
③ Graduates will have acquired practical and applied skills that will enable them to provide accurate advice and appropriate proposals from a political policy perspective to national and local governments, corporations and other public and private entities, especially as the economic and industrial situation in Japan and other countries becomes more complex in the face of globalization.
