Features of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Hirosaki University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a Cultural Innovation Course and a Social Management Course. There are five programs in total under these courses: the Cultural Resources Program, Cultural Coexistence Program, Economics and Law Program, Corporate Strategy Program and Community Initiative Program.
One of the most prominent features of this faculty is that it allows students to comprehensively study both the humanities and social sciences fields. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences divides itself into two courses and five programs to provide a wide variety of subjects. For the Cultural Innovation Course, the curriculum consists of humanities lectures such as philosophy, literature, cultural properties, history, international studies and foreign languages. On the other hand, the curriculum for the Social Management Course consists of social sciences lectures including economics, law, business administration, sociology and anthropology. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences therefore offers courses on a variety of subjects, as if the departments of literature, law, economics, business management, international studies and information sciences were combined into a single faculty. Students will select courses, programs, seminars and a theme for graduation project or special research topic to strengthen their specialty. Another key feature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is small-group classes. The faculty offers approximately 70 types of seminars and each seminar is designed for groups of less than 10 students. Instructors provide well thought-out, meticulous sessions. These small-class seminars are closely related to the graduation project or special research topic that students will conduct in their fourth year. Under the guidance of the seminar instructors, the four years of study each student goes through will culminate in their graduation project or special research topic.
